Let’s focus on the solution!

What we focus on tends to become our reality. ‘The law of attraction’ is what some people would call it. Isn’t it always the case that whenever we’re in desperate need for staff, there never seems to be anyone around? And then once we’ve stopped stressing and we no longer really need them, people seem to come out of the woodwork?

Stressing about a problem just seems to make it worse. You feel overwhelmed, overworked and hopeless. AND… when you’re working full time in your business, who has the time to do anything else?! Inevitably, you end up rushing and quickly putting an ad on one of the job boards and hoping for the best.

So, if you’re currently looking for staff, instead of focussing on the problem, let’s focus on the solutions.

Just like when dating; You’ll never meet someone if you stay at home and don’t ‘put yourself out there’ – the first step to meeting your new team member is putting yourself out there. Here’s some suggestions from me:

  1. Look at your social media – does it display your salon aesthetic, your team having fun, and the quality of your work? We all think that our social media is just used to attract clients to your salon or clinic – but the majority of candidates will also check out your socials before applying to work with you. We speak to hundreds of candidates each week and what a lot of them tell us is they apply for a role where 1. They see smiling and happy photos of the team (this is a big one), 2. They can see the salon space and 3. They can see photos of great hair / beauty transformations. It’s worth putting in some time and effort with your socials.

  2. Get the word out that you’re looking for staff! Talk to your team and offer them a referral bonus if they refer someone to you and you hire them. Put a sign in your front window, start joining local hairdressing or beauty facebook groups in your area, and after reading the rules-post about what you can offer in there.

  3. Invest in an advertising campaign. Whether this is through us or one of the leading job boards – it is worth the money to find the right person. I know, I know – some people advertise for months on these job boards and find no one and think ‘what a waste of money’.
