In our industry, Hair & Beauty employees and owners are more than just ‘Hairdressers’ and ‘Beauty Therapists’. We are counsellors, mentors, confidantes, artists, visionaries and educators; however, we are so undervalued in what we do in empowering our clients to feel good about themselves.
We’re on our feet all day, the work is both extremely physically and emotionally demanding, along with working long hours, our job, on top of our ‘job’ is to be your friend and your support person. We normally see you regularly, maybe once a month, a fortnight, every 8 weeks – we’re there with you to celebrate your wins in life, as well as console you through your toughest times.
Sitting in our chair, or lying on our beds, you trust us with not only your hair, or your face or body, but with your secrets, your worries and fears, your innermost thoughts. We’re creating art and working carefully with chemicals and machinery, whilst listening and caring.
We make sure that you have water, tea, coffee, wine, snacks, while we can’t remember the last time we had a chance to run out the back for a quick bite or two of food. Our feet are aching while we make sure that your footrest is at the right height for you. We work long days, long hours, and barely get a chance to see our family after work or on the weekends. Our Award wages are low for our investment in our education, as are our business profits for the level of service we provide. We keep our prices as low and as affordable as we can for our clients, because we always put them first.
We do all of this day in, day out and why? Because we LOVE what we do. There’s not many people like us who can multitask, genuinely care and listen, and are highly skilled and artistic in our craft. We do it for not just for ourselves; it is our calling.
