Creating a Seamless Trial Day: Dos and Don’ts for Salon Owners

Trial days are a powerful way to assess a potential hire’s skills, communication, and compatibility—but only if done right. A poor trial experience can drive great candidates away.

DO

✅ Set Clear Expectations: Let candidates know what services they’ll be asked to perform, the expected duration of the shift, and who they’ll be working with.

✅ Create a Welcoming Environment: Introduce them to the team, offer a quick tour, and help them feel part of the space.

✅ Balance Observations: Assess both technical ability and interpersonal dynamics. Watch how they interact with clients and team members.

✅ Provide Constructive Feedback: Whether they’re successful or not, share kind, useful feedback. This builds respect for your brand.

DON’T

❌ Leave the candidate unsupervised or under-guided.

❌ Use the day for unpaid labour. Respect their time and effort.

❌ Let the team be cold or competitive—this reflects poorly on your culture.

❌ Forget to follow up. Even a ‘no’ deserves a thank-you email or call.

Treat your trial day like a two-way street. It’s your chance to showcase your salon just as much as it’s their chance to shine. Make it count 😉
