Hair ageing can look different for everyone and is a topic that is discussed by clients and stylists alike. Many clients are actively looking for ways to prevent their hair from ageing, and will do everything they can to ensure the condition of their hair is prioritised at all times. To uncover how you can help support your clients on this journey, HJ spoke to Gill Berry, a member of the JOICO EMEA Senior Creative Artist Team, to discuss her top tips on caring for ageing hair.

Signs of Hair Ageing – What to Tell Your Clients to Look Out For

As hair ages, you are likely to notice telltale signs – hair that is dryer, dull, or even brittle. Other common signs are thinning, lack of volume and more greys popping up as your hair begins to lose its natural pigment. Many also notice their hair becomes coarse – a different texture compared to earlier years. On average, a single hair lives for up to six years. Each strand of hair is comprised of a protein called ‘keratin’ and is surrounded by an outer layer of tiny scales that are known as the ‘cuticle’ of your hair. As you age, the cuticle of your hair can become raised which can lead to dry, thirsty locks and unruly hair that frizzes easily.

How to Care for Ageing Hair

There are a few things you can advise your clients to do to reduce the appearance of ageing hair. Begin with treating hair with extra TLC when washing and styling. Tell them not to overload their hair with product and to gently massage it into the scalp and throughout the hair. You should also make sure they are using the right products that care for ageing hair and will help to replenish lacking vitamins (Gill recommends the new JOICO YouthLock range, which is formulated with collagen.)

Next, advise them to avoid the overuse of heated appliances – explaining that this really effects the hair and can leave it looking and feeling dull, heavy and aged. They should limit usage to once per week if possible (a big ask for many) and ensure they are using a heat defence spray throughout.
